Three Easy Ways to Pay your Tax Bill

Published on: 14/01/2015

If you complete a Self Assessment tax return and have a tax bill, then it will be due at the end of January.  There are three easy ways to pay your tax bill, and can be made even if you don’t have a bill or a HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) payslip.  However, all three methods will require you to know your Unique Tax Reference (UTR) number, which is a 10 digit code issued for Self Assessment.  For clients we act for, we should be able to provide you with your UTR number if you can’t find it.

1. By BACS

If you use online banking, then you can log in and make a payment.  HMRC’s bank details can be found here.

2. By BillPay

This is an easy way to pay by debit or credit card.  You simply access BillPay via the HMRC website and enter your details.  NB there is an additional charge of 1.4% if paying by credit card.  More details can be found here.

3. By Post

This is the more conventional way, and is as simple as putting a cheque in the post with your payslip.  NB if you don’t have a payslip, then you can create one here.

NB as with all tax payments, please make sure they are done in time to avoid being late.  Late payments can attract interest and surcharges.

Please note: posts were written at a specific time and reflect the rules in place at that time, which may no longer be relevant. Furthermore, the posts are generic in nature.
